To provide technical expertise and execute laboratory research strategies in support of multiple in vivo and in vitro projects focused on expedited evaluation and the clinical translation of therapies for type 1 diabetes and kidney disease. This position will be responsible for providing peer leadership and technical support in the laboratory for research experiments and data integrity.


Reports to a member of the T1D Leadership team. Internal relationships including working closely with technical staff and members of the scientific leadership team in T1D regular collaborations with members of other research departments at NNRC-S; and frequent interaction with project managers and other colleagues in Denmark. May interact with external research collaborators both academia and industry based. Serve as a mentor to junior staff members within and outside of their project teams.

 Essential Functions

·       Design and conduct complex mouse model studies and/or in vitro experiments—activities include treatment in vivo administration via a variety of injection routes; regular monitoring for disease and welfare; and tissue collection and processing; in vitro studies involving mouse, human, or non-human primate tissues or cells. Identify, develop, and implement biomarker assays in support of in vivo studies and clinical translation. Assay methods may include, but are not limited to, histology and imaging, FACS, and ELISpot.

·       Completes assignments requiring an expert level knowledge of techniques and practices related to the research area.

·       Accumulates knowledge and skills to support development and management of research protocols in support of multiple drug discovery efforts.

·       Performs data analyses and presents findings and recommendations to research team.

·       Works in a team-focused environment to ensure progress of global research projects.

·       Maintains the laboratories and perform other job related duties as assigned.

·       Developing the knowledge and skills needed to support development and management of research protocols in support of multiple drug discovery efforts.

·       Handles and process human tissue for cell isolation.

·       Independently formulate, and implement a long-range workplan in order to meet project objectives.

·       Supports business goals, shares learnings, knowledge and skills, and cross-functional teamwork.

·       Uses knowledge and experiences to interpret and properly document experimental data.

·       Ensures data integrity. Conducts data collection and routine data analysis and documentation of data. Maintains laboratory notebooks in accordance with Novo Nordisk’s standards.

·       Works with Department Heads and Scientists to insure better practice sharing and implementation within the lab.

·       Provides technical mentorship, scientific guidance to junior staff and peer leadership.

·       Use networking opportunities to provide research opportunities with NNRC.

Physical Requirements

·       Works with human and animal blood and tissue; works in a laboratory environment that may include hazardous chemicals and blood borne pathogens.

·       Lab exposure may include hazardous chemicals and blood-borne pathogens.

·       May require 0-10% travel.


·       Bachelor's Degree with minimum of 8 years of experience post-degree; advanced degree may be substituted for experience as appropriate. Relevant experience may be substituted for degree when appropriate

·       Experience working with mouse models in BSL2 conditions, administration of drugs via different routes of injection (including intraperitoneal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular), and tissue collection is required

·       Experience working with human samples required; experience with GLCP preferred

·       Previous experience in biopharmaceutical industry lab preferred

·       Expertise in flow cytometry required, including assay development for GLCP-like use and experience conducting highly complex analyses of flow cytometry data. Knowledge of additional immunoassay methods preferred.

·       Strong understanding of immunology, especially autoimmunity and immune rejection, strongly preferred.
